The town of Perth started a new art exhibition this year called Froid d’Art and I submitted a piece called Red Fox. Each artist was given a 32×15 piece of acrylic to paint on. The art was then submerged in water for up to three weeks for the freezing process. The finished blocks of ice weigh 300 pounds and were installed around the band shell area behind town hall.
My piece, Red Fox, was done in acrylics. The fox is a frequent visitor in our area, active all year round. Foxes listen for prey under the snow in winter and can be seen “mousing” (leaping into the air and diving into the snow headfirst to catch their meal).
Since the piece in the block of ice may be viewed from both the front and the back, I painted the back of the acrylic panel as well.
Here is an image of the piece in ice installed at the Perth bandshell.
See the town’s website for more information. The exhibition is part of the Frost & Fire Winter Festival February 18 & 19, 2023.
Since the pieces were installed, the weather turned quite warm and sunny and affected many of the ice blocks. We’re hoping they hold up through the festival this coming weekend!
An interesting aside: In sourcing images to inspire my piece, Steev helped me by inserting this prompt into the Midjourney AI image generator: “a nature photograph of a lone fox hunting in the snow, viewed from the side, National Geographic, award-winning, photo, wildlife photography”. It came up with some great images, although many of them had too many paws!
Here are some more images of the Red Fox before it started to crackle up (and one of the back afterwards).
