Portraits Exhibition at Las Laguna Gallery

I’m excited to be taking part in the Portraits Exhibition at Las Laguna Gallery, California from November 5 – 28, 2020. This is a virtual exhibition, so all work is on the website. My artist friend Eleni Mokas is also in the show. She was the one who prompted me to apply.

Eleni and I painted each other en plein air almost 10 years ago. It was a beautiful, sunny, warm day. Here’s my portrait of her. The Painter, Eleni, 24x18, NFS I mentioned to her that my friend Ania Szado and I painted each other years earlier. We’d made decisions that made it rather difficult, since she decided to paint me looking at her and I decided to paint her looking at her canvas! Needless to say, there was a lot of waiting around. So Eleni and I chose to paint each other while we were looking at each other!

A little while after we painted together when Eleni was back home in Mexico, she sent her portrait up to me. It’s a joy to see them together on the wall here. This is Eleni’s portrait of me.Catherine, 24x18, NFS

I love painting portraits. It’s a great way to deepen my relationship with someone, whether I’m working from life or from a photograph. You can see more images on my portrait website. Some portraits include other subjects to create more of a story about someone’s life. These can be animals, boats, trees, motorcycles, books… anything that helps the person’s character shine.
