Tree Hugger commissioned painting

Tree Hugger, 30x15, commissioned painting, SOLDEarlier in the fall, I was commissioned to do this painting, Tree Hugger. I worked from two photographs. One was an image of a majestic white pine towering over the other trees near a lake. The other was a close-up image of a man hugging this beautiful big tree’s trunk.

The woman who commissioned presented it as a Christmas gift to her partner. The tree was special to them both as it was on his cottage land, which had just been sold.

When painting from photographs, we can decide what to focus on and what to leave out. In this image, a large branch of the tree about halfway up had broken and died. The needles were rusty brown. I suggested I’d leave this out and the woman said, “We have often joked about how to get rid of the red clump. Painting it out is one way.”

I selected a 30×15 inch canvas to accentuate the tree’s height. The tree hugger at the bottom of the commissioned painting is only about an inch high, which further focuses attention on the grandmother pine.
