In honour of all the Gray Treefrogs we used to see out here, I painted this Gray Treefrog (Hyla Versicolor). I’m hoping it will help bring them back 🙂
The first couple years we lived here, we’d see them frequently. This one was posed on our watering can handle. A workmate and I found one resting on her passenger side mirror in the grocery store parking lot! We sometimes saw them outside the second storey windows.
The Gray Treefrog (Hyla Versicolor) have the ability to change their colour, hence the Latin name. Their call is a short flute-like trill. We heard them many summers even when we didn’t see them here.
Although they are not listed as endangered, they are designated as a Specially Protected Amphibian according to Ontario Nature. There is an interesting interactive map linked from that site which shows the known ranges of Gray Treefrogs in Ontario.
